Help the Lotus in May Day

Volunteers needed to help restore Nuttall's Lotus Dunes site in Mission
Bay.

Volunteers will be flagging the sites of the endangered Nuttall's Lotus
with flags to aid in removal of non-native plants from the site.

When: Saturday May 20th 9 am to noon

Where: Take I-5 to the Seaworld Drive exit and head West. Continue
straight through the intersection with Friar's Road and turn at the
first left onto the frontage road. Turn left at the stop sign, drive
along the frontage road parallel to the San Diego River and park
alongside the road. The site is at the east end of the frontage road.

Bring: gardening gloves, water, sunscreen

The goal of flagging the Lotus nutallianus is to let everyone know that something special is there. If someone comes out with weedeaters it would be very easy to cut them down or just pull them up. We also have several Lotus species in the area, there is Lotus scoparius on site as well. The Lotus nuttallianus especially when it is not flowering can easily be misidentified as a weed.

Welcome to the Nutall's Lotus Dunes Restoration page

The Nuttall's Lotus Dunes Project is a joint effort between San Diego Audubon and the San Diego chapter of the California Native Plant Society, in coordination with City of San Diego park staff.

The goals of the project are to:
- Protect and increase the numbers on site of the endangered Lotus nuttalianus (Nuttall's lotus)
- Increase the biodiversity of the site
- Teach visitors about the native plant community

The site is a gateway for pedestrians and bikers to the coastal areas of the San Diego River and Mission Bay Park. As such, it offers an excellent opportunity to acquaint visitors with the native plants of the area.
